
NEW DELHI: Railways are the means of transport relied on by millions of people in the country. The Indian Railways Ministry is preparing for revolutionary changes from next month (July 1st). The rules are being changed to ensure the safety of passengers and make travel easier.
From now on, those violating railway rules will have to pay heavy fines. Traveling without a ticket, not following safety standards, causing trouble to fellow passengers, etc. will be banned from July 1st. According to a special gazette notification of the railway ministry published on June 19, major changes have been made to the existing rules. The changes are being brought under the ambit of the Public Trust Act.
Know the changes
1) From now on, the fine for traveling without a ticket will be Rs 500, while earlier it was Rs 250.
2) If found using someone else' ticket or pass, a fine of Rs 500 will be charged and the ticket will be confiscated.
3) Men travelling in coaches reserved for women passengers will have to pay a fine of Rs 2,500.
4) The fine for illegally trading in the vicinity of a railway station is Rs 2,000. If it is repeated, it will be Rs 5,000.
5) Smoking in the vicinity of a railway station will have to pay a fine of Rs 2,000.
6) Carrying dangerous or prohibited items in railway stations can attract a minimum fine of Rs 10,000 and imprisonment of up to six months. The decision will be entirely up to the court.
The new changes aim to make the railways, which the public relies on, as faultless as possible. In order to reduce violations and increase passenger safety, the railways have allowed fines to be imposed on the spot instead of lengthy court proceedings.
