THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has reported a low-pressure area over the southeast Arabian Sea and adjoining Lakshadweep. A trough associated with the cyclonic circulation linked to the system extends across Kerala up to the north Tamil Nadu coast, the IMD said.
Meanwhile, a well-marked low-pressure area persists over the central east Bay of Bengal and adjoining southeast Bay of Bengal. It is likely to intensify into a depression on Saturday and move west-northwestwards. The system is expected to develop into a deep depression by October 25 and further intensify into a cyclonic storm over the central west Bay of Bengal on the morning of October 26.
The system is likely to move further west-northwestwards and intensify before reaching the central west Bay of Bengal, near the Andhra Pradesh coast, on the morning of October 28.
Under the influence of these weather systems, Kerala is likely to receive extremely heavy rainfall until October 27. Thunderstorms are also expected, along with strong winds reaching speeds of 30-40 kmph, the IMD said.
Meanwhile, the Indian National Centre for Ocean Information Services (INCOIS) has warned of possible coastal erosion along the Kanyakumari coast due to the Kallakkadal phenomenon. High waves measuring 1.0 to 1.2 metres are likely until 11.30 pm on Saturday.
