CHENNAI: The TVK government led by Vijay has suffered a setback after the Madras High Court stayed its order granting government jobs to the family members of those killed in the Karur stampede. The court has decided to conduct a detailed hearing on the matter.

The Vijay government had earlier announced compassionate appointments for the dependents of the 41 people who died in the stampede during Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam's (TVK) event in Karur on September 27 last year. However, the decision was challenged before the Madras High Court through a public interest litigation (PIL). The petitioners argued that government jobs should be provided by adhering to constitutional norms and recruitment rules.

After hearing the matter, the Madras High Court stayed the government order granting government jobs. The court also clarified that a final decision would be taken only after hearing the arguments of both sides. The appointments were announced as a relief measure for the bereaved families. However, the decision came under legal scrutiny after the petitioners argued that such appointments must comply with constitutional provisions, recruitment rules, and the principle of equality.
