THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Free Onam kits will be distributed to yellow card holders during Onam, said Food Minister Anoop Jacob. Onam kits will also be distributed to inmates of welfare institutions. The minister also said that the government has allocated Rs 53 crore as part of the smooth conduct of the scheme. The distribution will start from August 10 and will be completed by August 25, the day of Uthradom. According to the figures as of June 2026, a total of 6,09,305 kits are required. The cost of one kit, which contains 16 items of products, including cloth bags, is estimated at around Rs 854.
According to the minister, the Onam preparations of the Food and Civil Supplies Department and Supplyco are in the final stages. For this, 1,65,932 metric tonnes of rice and 24,506 metric tonnes of wheat will be brought to the market. Special rice distribution to the non-priority category on the occasion of Onam will begin next month. Blue card holders will be given three kilos of rice at Rs 10.90 and two kilos of wheat at Rs 8.70.
As part of the market intervention, Supplyco will organise Onam Mega Trade Fairs in three districts, Onam District Fairs in 11 districts and Onam Markets in 126 assembly constituencies this year. Onam Mega Trade Fairs will be held in Thiruvananthapuram, Ernakulam and Kozhikode from August 8 to 25. Onam District Fairs in 11 districts will be held from August 16 to 25.
