MAHOBA: An eight-month pregnant woman was hacked to death by her husband in front of their two young children in Uttar Pradesh's Mahoba district on Saturday night. The victim has been identified as Manisha. Police have arrested her husband, Hanif Mansoori, in connection with the murder.
According to police, the accused tried to cover up the crime after the murder by calling the police and making up a false story. However, the statement of the couple's five-year-old son, who witnessed the incident, proved crucial in exposing the truth. Police later questioned Hanif and arrested him.
Police said Hanif, who was allegedly heavily intoxicated, returned home drunk on Saturday night. When his wife tried to stop him from drinking more alcohol, the two got into an argument. Enraged, he allegedly attacked her with a sickle, repeatedly hacking her on the head, body and hands. The brutal attack took place in front of the couple's children, aged five and two.
Manisha's brother alleged that Hanif was suspicious by nature and had a history of physically abusing his wife over trivial issues. He said Manisha had been forced out of the house several times in the past but always returned for the sake of her family and children.
The victim's relatives have demanded the maximum punishment for the accused and expressed concern over the future of the couple's children. Hanif's father has also demanded the death penalty for his son and said he would personally take responsibility for raising the children. Police said further legal proceedings are underway and the investigation is continuing.
