THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: In a significant political development, CPI(M) District Secretary V. Joy has announced that the Left Democratic Front (LDF) will not support the no-confidence motion moved by the United Democratic Front (UDF) against the Thiruvananthapuram Municipal Corporation administration. Joy stated that the UDF has not formally approached the CPI(M) seeking assistance on the matter. Clarifying the party's stance, he noted that backing such a motion requires a strategic policy decision, which has not been made yet. However, he conspicuously added that future political realignments cannot be entirely ruled out.
The opposition Congress-led UDF had previously declared its intention to introduce the no-confidence motion, citing a severe administrative stalemate in the civic body. The political tension escalated recently following the imprisonment of a BJP councillor under the Kerala Anti-Social Activities (Prevention) Act (KAAPA). Speculation regarding an uncharacteristic alliance grew after former minister V. Sivankutty hinted that the CPI(M) might consider supporting the motion. Joy’s recent clarification, however, firmly sets aside those assumptions for now.
Reacting sharply to the CPI(M)'s decision, UDF Councillor K.S. Sabarinadhan alleged a tacit understanding between the LDF and the BJP to protect each other's interests. Sabarinadhan further claimed that the LDF's reluctance to support the motion is driven by the fear of the cancellation of controversial contractual appointments made under the past ruling front.
