Famous actor-director K Bhagyaraj passes away at 73

CHENNAI: Famous actor, director, screenwriter, composer and novelist K Bhagyaraj passed away Saturday morning following heart attack . He was 73. He was brought unconscious to Apollo Hospitals where doctors declared him dead. His death has caused a huge shock in the Tamil film industry and among his fans. He leaves behind his wife Poornima Bhagyaraj, an actress, son Santhanu Bhagyaraj and daughter Saranya Bhagyaraj, both actors.

He has been very active in recent times as well. Bhagyaraj had attended the wedding of actress Khushbu Sundar's daughter in Goa yesterday. Bhagyaraj has directed many famous films like Mundhanai Mudichu, Andha 7 Naatkal, Darling Darling Darling and had written scripts for many films.

Bhagyaraj was born on January 7 in 1953, near Gobichettipalayam, He started his film career through 16 Vayathinile in 1977. He later turned a director after two years. Over the next five decades, he made his mark in many areas of cinema, including production, screenwriting, songwriting, and acting. Many of Bhagyaraj's films have been remade in Telugu and Hindi. He has also written several novels.

Bhagyaraj last acted in Dhanush's Kubera released in 2025. While attending an event in January 2026, he had said that he would direct a film again.

His death is two weeks after the death of his mentor K Bharathiraja.
