CHRISTCHURCH: Malayali cricketer Sanju Samson said he prefers to focus on his own performance rather than respond to criticism and discussions surrounding him. He acknowledged that criticism and opinions are natural when playing for a team. He was speaking to the media after India's victory in the first T20 International against New Zealand.
"Whether on social media or elsewhere, we cannot keep track of what people are saying. We need to focus completely on our training and performance on the field. Playing for the Indian team is not easy, and there will always be a lot of discussions and opinions surrounding us. However, I don't play with the mindset of proving people wrong. Cricket is always my priority. I respect my training and prefer to keep things simple. I never allow outside opinions to affect my mindset," Sanju said.
India began its New Zealand tour with a stellar victory in the opening match, chasing down a target of 226 runs. In the first T20 International held in Christchurch yesterday, India defeated New Zealand by four wickets with two balls to spare after the hosts posted 225/4.
A brilliant half-century from Sanju Samson (67 off 33 balls), along with contributions from opener Abhishek Sharma (29), captain Shreyas Iyer (42) and Naman Dhir (42 not out), powered India to the impressive victory. Samson, who smashed eight fours and four sixes, laid the foundation for India's successful chase and was named Player of the Match. With the win, India took a 1-0 lead in the five-match series. The second match will be played at the same venue on Saturday.
