MYSURU: Karnataka witnessed widespread protests over the death of 11 heart patients in a government hospital in Mysuru within 24 hours. Relatives of the victims came forward, blaming the dearth of doctors and the poor treatment facilities. The mass death occurred at the Jayadeva Institute of Cardiovascular Sciences and Research in Mysuru. The victims were between the ages of 40 and 85.

Four people died on Monday morning, five on Tuesday night and two on Tuesday morning while undergoing treatment. The victims were identified as Syed Arif Pasha (80), Harish B.R. (40), Balashankar (65), Samshunnish (70), Raju (54), Ningagowda (70), Masina Banu (58), Gopala Raju (55), Bairoji Rao (80), Suhal Khan (43), and Neeli (79), all natives of Chamaraja Nagar in Mysore, Kodagu, Hassan, and Mandya.

The allegation is that the mass deaths were due to the lack of adequate medical facilities. It was also alleged that the patients did not receive emergency medical care. The relatives demanded a detailed investigation.

Meanwhile, the hospital authorities explained that the patients were brought to the hospital 12 to 24 hours after the time they should have received emergency treatment. Medical Superintendent Dr K.S. Sadanand said that no one died without receiving treatment and that the deaths were not due to staff shortages or negligence.

This is the only hospital where patients from Mysore, Kodagu, Hassan, and Mandya Chamaraja Nagar come for specialist heart treatment. Due to the patient rush and a lack of beds, around 20 patients were treated on trolleys. The ICU, which has a capacity of 18 patients, has 25 patients. There are also allegations that a doctor has to treat more than 100 patients a day.
