Major theft on train: Gold ornaments worth Rs 14 lakh stolen from Malayali family

MUMBAI: Gold ornaments worth around Rs 14 lakh were stolen from a Malayali family during a train journey. The theft took place on the Thiruvananthapuram-Mumbai Netravati Express. The victims were a mother and daughter travelling from Kayamkulam to Thane in Maharashtra.

Thane Kisan Nagar residents Smita Panicker and her daughter Shruthi Panicker were travelling in a sleeper coach when the incident occurred. The thief allegedly stole a bag containing three gold bangles and gold chains.

The incident took place between 5.15 am and 5.30 am on Sunday near Majorda Junction, between Goa and Tivim. The thief reportedly approached Smita when the train slowed down and snatched the bag from her. Smita tried to resist, leading to a brief struggle between the two. The thief then jumped off the moving train with the bag and fled.

Based on information provided by passengers, police have identified the suspect and intensified the search for him. The suspect has reportedly been identified as Nikhil Kumar, who is believed to be part of a gang involved in locker thefts.
