THOOTHUKUDI: In a landmark judgment ensuring swift delivery of justice, the Thoothukudi Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Special Court has awarded a double death sentence to the prime accused in the brutal sexual assault and murder of a 17-year-old high school student. The convict, identified as Dharma Muneeswaran, was ordered to be hanged till death. Demonstrating extraordinary efficiency, the judiciary pronounced its final verdict just 77 days after the harrowing incident took place.
The case dates back to March of this year, when the victim, a Class 12 student residing in Vilathikulam, Tamil Nadu, was reported missing. Following an intensive search operation by the local authorities, her body was discovered in a secluded, desolate forested area adjacent to her neighbourhood. A meticulous forensic and legal analysis led the special court to hand down two separate capital punishments explicitly targeting the individual counts of aggravated sexual assault and murder.
The breakthrough in the investigation came despite significant initial hurdles, as the crime scene completely lacked surveillance infrastructure. To overcome this obstacle, the police department established ten specialised investigation teams. Analysts meticulously audited 98 CCTV feeds from surrounding areas and utilised tower dump technology to screen 2,574 mobile phone logs.
The crucial lead emerged from a camera mounted on a nearby wind turbine, which captured a suspicious two-wheeler. Subsequent tracking revealed that the vehicle bore a falsified registration plate and had been reported stolen, ultimately leading law enforcement straight to Muneeswaran.
The swift judicial outcome coincided directly with explicit directives issued by Chief Minister Joseph Vijay to law enforcement agencies and administrative bodies to expedite trials and secure maximum penalties in cases involving violence against women and children. Notably, the TVK government had placed women’s safety and the strict maintenance of law and order at the forefront of its political platform during the recent election campaign.
