Widespread rain and strong winds in Kerala, eight districts on yellow alert

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Rains have intensified across the state following the formation of a low-pressure area in the northwest Bay of Bengal. Heavy rains were received in many places including the capital city Monday morning. According to the warning of the India Meteorological Department (IMD), eight districts are on yellow alert today. The yellow alert has been issued in Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Kottayam, Idukki, Ernakulam, Thrissur, Kannur and Kasaragod. The possibility of isolated heavy rains has been predicted in these places. Heavy rains are defined as a situation where rainfall ranging from 64.5 mm to 115.5 mm is received in 24 hours.

Fishing is prohibited on the coasts of the state and Lakshadweep today. In the coming hours, isolated moderate rains and strong winds up to 30 kmph are possible in other places except in Thiruvananthapuram. Isolated light rains are predicted in Thiruvananthapuram.

Fishermen and coastal residents are advised to be vigilant as there is a possibility of sea erosion in the state till 8.30 am as part of the black sea phenomenon.

1. As the sea is likely to become rough, stay away from the danger zones as per the instructions of the authorities.

2. Launching small boats and yachts into the sea should be avoided during this time.

3. Landing fishing vessels into the sea during the possibility of black sea phenomenon and high waves is just as dangerous as launching them into the sea. Therefore, launching and landing them into the sea during the strong waves should be avoided.

4. All activities, including beach-based tourism, should be completely avoided until the National Oceanographic Information Center withdraws the warning.

5. Fishing vessels (boats, yachts, etc.) should be safely moored in the harbor. Maintaining a safe distance between boats can avoid the risk of collision. The safety of fishing equipment should be ensured.
