An actor couple has announced their decision to quit the Malayalam television serial industry, citing severe mental harassment. Aswathy and Rahul, who work in the Malayalam serial industry, opened up about the mental distress they have been facing through a social media video. They said they had been systematically targeted for the past three years, leading to severe mental stress and health problems.
The couple alleged that baseless stories about them were being circulated on serial sets, causing considerable distress at their workplace. They said such false rumours had cost them several projects and made it difficult for them to find new opportunities. Aswathy also revealed that the mental stress had led to health issues, including panic attacks.
They further alleged that some senior actors and others working with them on serial sets had been speaking ill of them and spreading unnecessary gossip. Prioritising their peace of mind, the couple has decided to leave the television industry after completing their ongoing projects. They said they would continue their lives by supporting each other and made it clear that they were not afraid of anyone.
In the video, Aswathy said they had never spoken publicly about their personal lives or problems on social media because they had always preferred to keep their lives private.
"I am quitting the serial industry. The mental harassment I have been facing is unbearable. I have been going through this for the past three years," Aswathy said.
"A group of people have been mentally torturing me by spreading claims that I mistreat my husband, who stands by my side. When you work in this industry, people come up with all kinds of stories about you, even things they know nothing about. We have always stood by each other and ensured that such stories do not affect us," she said.
"Because of this, we have lost our work, peace of mind and income. I have reached the limits of my patience. I am certain that something will happen to me, and that is why I decided to come forward with this video. At this age, I am responsible for looking after my family. After my father's death, I have been taking care of my mother and younger brother. I am a fairly bold person, but this situation has pushed me to the limit. I have lost control of the situation, and my health is deteriorating. All this is happening while I am still trying to live and work in public," Aswathy added.
