THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB) has informed the reintroduction of power restrictions across the state. The curbs will be in effect daily from 6 pm to 12 midnight and are expected to continue until June 30. The decision was necessitated by a shortage of electricity available through power exchanges and inadequate rainfall in the state. Reduced rainfall has affected hydropower generation, forcing authorities to impose restrictions to manage demand.

KSEB stated that the strengthening of the El Niño phenomenon has led to a decline in power availability across the country. Although Kerala continues to receive electricity from its own generation facilities and allocations from the central grid, the state is expected to face a deficit of up to 900 MW until June 30.

Power consumption in Kerala touched 4,900 MW recently, putting additional pressure on the grid. As a result, power restrictions had already been imposed in some areas on the previous day.

The state is also attempting to procure electricity from external sources. However, KSEB clarified that power borrowed during the current period would have to be returned later, particularly during the summer season, making temporary power regulation necessary.

Officials say the restrictions are intended to ensure stable power supply and prevent larger disruptions in the coming weeks.
